FAQ

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a certification that verifies a document's authenticity, making it valid for use in countries that are part of the 1961 Hague Convention Treaty.

Which documents are eligible for an apostille?

You can apostille documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, court orders, police records, academic transcripts, diplomas, power of attorney, financial documents, commercial invoices, and background checks.

Can notaries give an apostille?

No, notaries can’t provide an apostille, as they are only issued by the Secretary of State’s office or other government agencies. But you can hire a notary like us to handle the apostille process for you. We submit your documents to the appropriate government agencies and return them once they’re complete.

Do documents need to be notarized first?

Documents that aren’t government-issued, such as a power of attorney, affidavit, or bank statement, need to be notarized before you can get them apostilled. Official documents such as birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, and divorce decrees that are issued by state agencies generally don’t require notarization.

How long does the apostille process take?

State apostilles are typically processed faster, within five to ten business days. Federal apostilles, on the other hand, tend to take longer, with processing times ranging from six to eight weeks. Keep in mind that some states offer expedited services for an additional fee, which can shorten the processing time to as little as one to two business days.

Do apostilles expire?

Apostilles don’t expire, but some countries may request recent apostilles within the last three to six months, especially for documents like criminal record checks or others that can change over time. Note that some organizations may require you to get recent apostilles on all documents, regardless of type, which is why it’s important to check specific requirements first.
